First came the wool

Cici is a Chinese artist and craftswoman, and the founder of the studio Cici’s Story. She began in 2014 with dry felting: with a needle and a ball of wool, she sculpted small, chubby piggies. Each one was one of a kind, because in felt no two pieces are ever identical.

This matters if you want to understand LuLu. Her soft, slightly uneven shapes and warm pink don’t come from modelling software. They come from a hand that spent years working wool.

The piggy from the tin

LuLu’s story is absurd in the best possible sense. LuLu is a piggy elf who lived in a tin of luncheon meat. She was so curious about the world that she eventually climbed out — and discovered that the outside was far more interesting than it had looked from within. That is exactly how Cici describes her character: as an elf who popped out of a tin of food.

Pink colour, goofy poses, zero seriousness. LuLu doesn’t save the world and carries no sadness inside. She simply is — surprised and content.

Sometimes all it takes is stepping out of the tin to see how big the world really is.

Shanghai, 2019

The breakthrough came in 2019 at the STS Art Toy Show in Shanghai, one of the most important art toy fairs in China. LuLu stood out so much that she won a following straight away. Her fans call themselves SPAM Fans — after the English name for canned luncheon meat.

That same year, Cici began working with the Hong Kong company TOYZERO+ and released her first blind box series. And so a hand-felted piggy became a collectible character sold across Asia and beyond.

The world of LuLu

LuLu doesn’t travel alone. Her most loyal companion is the cat MiMi. Successive series put her on a scooter, on stilts and on a tandem bicycle, and dress her up in seasonal costumes and festive themes. In 2024, LuLu celebrated her fifth birthday with a big pop-up in Hong Kong featuring more than a hundred exclusive items.
