Cats that have no names — but have shark hats
In 2017, Japanese illustrator Juno (Junko Noji) began posting drawings of cats in absurd costumes on social media. Cats dressed as sharks. Cats as fried shrimp. Cats in fruits, vegetables, buns. No names, no plot — just fluffy, slightly surreal images that immediately conquered Japanese platforms. This is how Mofusand was born — named after "mofu mofu" (Japanese for soft and fluffy) — one of the biggest kawaii phenomena of recent years, now managed by the Japanese company Spiralcute.
Juno — the silent artist
Juno is one of the most distinctive figures in the world of kawaii — because she is virtually absent. She never publishes her own photos, gives a minimal number of interviews, and does not build a personal brand. She lets the cats do the talking. Despite this anonymity, her style is instantly recognizable — pastels, round shapes, expressive eyes, and that specific absurd humor that makes it possible to love a cat in a shark costume for no reason at all.
Shark and Shrimp
The two most famous Mofusand designs are Same-nyan (shark-cat) and Ebi-nyan (shrimp-cat). Same-nyan — a white cat peering out of a shark's mouth — has become an absolute icon of the brand and the starting point for pop-up stores at Tokyo Station. Ebi-nyan, with its perfectly composed shrimp tail between the cat's ears, is a masterpiece of absurdity and cuteness in a single image.
Collaboration with Sanrio
In 2022 and 2023, Juno collaborated with Sanrio — and created a series that immediately became a hit: Mofusand cats dressed as Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, My Melody, Kuromi, Pompompurin, and Hangyodon. A unique achievement — Sanrio characters retained their accessories and colors but were drawn in Juno's realistic, soft style. Two worlds of kawaii merged into one.
Global reach
Mofusand has spread far beyond Japan. Uniqlo, KFC Taiwan, Monster Hunter — all wanted Juno's cats on their products. In Hong Kong, during Chinese New Year, shopping malls transform into Mofusand kingdoms. In Poland, Europe, and the USA, Mofusand figures and plush toys are one of the hottest topics in blind box communities.
Iconic series
🦈 Same-nyan (Shark-Cat)
The brand's absolute icon. A white cat peering out of a shark's mouth — pop-up stores, plush toys, figures. The most recognizable Mofusand design in the world.
🍤 Ebi-nyan (Shrimp-Cat)
A fried shrimp tail perfectly composed between the cat's ears. Aesthetic absurdity in its purest form — a bestseller in themed cafes.
🎀 Mofusand × Sanrio
Juno's cats dressed as Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, Kuromi, and others. Limited collaboration 2022–2023 — one of the most sought-after collectible IP cross-overs.
🍓 Fruit and Vegetable Series
Cats as strawberries, bananas, watermelons, peppers. Seasonal versions for every time of year — a staple of the Mofusand collection.
Three pillars of creativity
Nameless cats
No plot, no characters — just pure, absurd cuteness
Absurdity as philosophy
Shark + cat = happiness — humor without translation
Artist in the shadows
Juno never shows her face — her cats speak for her
Juno doesn't show her face, doesn't tell stories, doesn't explain why a cat is a shark. And that's why Mofusand works — because in a world full of explanations, these cats just exist. Fluffy, absurd, and completely sufficient.
