My Melody: Yasuko Matsumoto - KICKOMI

My Melody: Yasuko Matsumoto

Dowiedz się więcej →

A white rabbit in a pink hood. Sincere, warm, and unfailingly kind. My Melody appeared at Sanrio in 1975 — a year after Hello Kitty — and since then has not left the top five most popular characters for 25 consecutive years. This is a record that no one has broken. Yasuko Matsumoto, the designer also responsible for Kiki and Lala, created a character inspired by Little Red Riding Hood — and then allowed her to grow into something of her own. The hood changed color from red to pink. Kuromi appeared — a black rabbit, a mischievous rival who turned out to be My Melody's opposite reflection. Together, they became one of Sanrio's most iconic duos. Why has My Melody consistently won hearts for half a century? What makes this simple, sincere character triumph over more spectacular designs? And what is kawaii, which not only looks cute but genuinely feels?
