Ayan Deng and the boy who dreams a little longer
Dimoo came out of two years of building a dream world. He became one of Pop Mart's four flagship IPs — and the king of collaborations.
Ayan Deng graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 2017 and founded her own YAN Studio, where she leads the development of the Dimoo series. For two years she built an entire dream world, peopled with strange little creatures and quiet stories, before Dimoo arrived at Pop Mart in 2019. Her character — a shy boy with a fluffy little cloud in his hair and eyes full of dreams — became one of the whole company's four flagship IPs.
In the real world Dimoo is a shy boy who wants to make friends but is held back by his fears. In dreams he becomes an explorer. That's where Baby Cloud lives — a little cloud hidden in his hair that changes shape depending on his mood.
Loneliness with warmth
A pastel palette, huge eyes, rounded forms, scenes of reflection — Dimoo sits alone in the rain, floats in space, sleeps in an aquarium. It's loneliness served with tenderness, not sadness. Ayan creates Dimoo from her own childhood memories and quiet emotions — as a way of passing on comfort, happiness and courage through the adventures of a little boy.
The king of collaborations
Dimoo has more brand collaborations than any other Pop Mart character — UNIQLO, Häagen-Dazs, Kiehl's, Perrier, KFC, Disney. The little sleeping boy from a dream fits in everywhere and has become a pop-culture icon. A fun fact: Ayan herself can't get hold of the hidden Dimoo figures — the odds and production numbers are set by Pop Mart, not the artist.
Dimoo isn't a toy. He's a reminder that somewhere inside you there still lives someone who wanted to dream a little longer.
