Da Xin and design that whispers instead of shouting
A fairy-tale world for grown-ups with a childlike heart — built on a single sentence: stars can't shine without darkness.
Da Xin is a Chinese illustrator and art-toy designer who, in 2020 — together with A Li, another illustrator of the '90s generation — created the world of Twinkle Twinkle. The starting point was a single sentence: “stars can't shine without darkness”. On that philosophy they built a fairy tale for adults who still have a childlike heart — full of warmth, calm and little star creatures that wake at night to gather dreams.
Comfort design
Rounded forms, soft textures, a warm palette of gold and orange, stars and moons as a constant motif — the whole thing like an illustration from a book you remember fondly, not necessarily a specific one, but familiar in mood. Pyjamas, star-shaped caps, little situational scenes — every detail suggests calm, not spectacle. This is design that doesn't try to impress, only to keep you company, and in which everyone can see overlooked aspects of themselves.
The fastest-growing IP
Pop Mart itself described Twinkle Twinkle as one of its fastest-growing IPs. The first exhibition in Chengdu drew crowds, and figures from the limited series reach up to 30 times their retail price on the secondary market. In Beijing a collectors' community called “Star Alliance” even sprang up, where the figures became a form of social currency.
Not every design has to shout. The one that whispers can reach far deeper.
