Pucky and worlds where good and evil hold hands
Raised between Hong Kong and Canada, she took her name from Shakespeare's mischievous fairy — and built an aesthetic where sweetness and darkness exist without conflict.
Born in 1986 in Hong Kong and raised between Hong Kong and Canada — Pucky grew up between two cultures and two identities. That experience became the core of her work. After graduating from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver in 2008, she returned to Hong Kong, where she works as a freelance artist and illustrator. She took her pseudonym from Puck — the impish elf from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream: she added the letter “y”, and that's how her artist name was born. In 2017 she signed a deal with Pop Mart, and a year later the Pool Babies series debuted.
Cute and dark in harmony
Pucky's work is an integrated harmony of opposites — good and evil, love and fear, cute and dark coexist without conflict. It's exactly this tension that makes her figures so irresistible. Pucky draws on nature, history, science and Romanticism; her characters explore nature and the spiritual world — a colourful dream with a sensitivity and a dark side. Growing up between two cultures also led her to an artistic exploration of questions of identity and belonging.
A world of her own — Pucky Universe
Beyond Pop Mart, Pucky runs her own shop puckyuniverse.com with independent Beanie series — Monster B, The Ghost, Animal B, Relax B and others. The figures are often hand-painted, limited, for true fans only. Her first figure was Space Clown — a little alien wandering the Earth; as she says herself, as a sad child she dreamed of aliens who would take her away.
