Smiley: Harvey Ball & Franklin Loufrani - KICKOMI

Smiley: Harvey Ball & Franklin Loufrani

Learn more →

A yellow circle, two dots, one arc. In 1963 Harvey Ball drew them in ten minutes for an insurance company and was paid 45 dollars. No one trademarked it. Nine years later the French journalist Franklin Loufrani put the smile on a newspaper’s front page, named it Smiley and registered it as a trademark. Two stories of one face — one about a gesture, the other about business.
