Monchhichi: Yoshiharu Washino & Sekiguchi - KICKOMI

Monchhichi モンチッチ the iconic monkey that returns to the hearts of collectors 🐒💫

Dowiedz się więcej →

On January 25, 1974, designer Yoshiharu Washino created a monkey in Tokyo with a thumb in its mouth, five freckles on each cheek, and a vinyl face on a plush body. The Sekiguchi Corporation wanted to teach children love and respect. In Japan, legend has it that a pair of Monchhichis given to a loved one brings lifelong happiness—which is why they were always sold in twos. They sold better in Germany than in Japan. In France, they were Kiki; in Italy, Mon Cicci; in the UK, Chicaboo. Hanna-Barbera made a TV series. Mattel bought the license. In 2024, Monchhichi celebrated its 50th birthday—and it still has its thumb in its mouth.
