Angels in the makeup bag

Sonny Angel has already dressed up as fruit, vegetables, animals and cakes. This time he has stepped into the world of makeup. The Makeup Angel Series is a collaboration between Dreams and the Japanese beauty brand shu uemura, released as a limited holiday edition. The angels wear glossy metallic jackets and animal headpieces, and each one carries a single colour from the brand's palette: violet, blue, red, gold or pink.

The series motto is fly high, play free!. Dreams describes it as a game of self-discovery: just as a new lipstick shade can reveal a different version of your face, a random angel from the box is meant to show you a piece of yourself you haven't met yet.

Who was Shu Uemura

To see why this collaboration is more interesting than yet another “licensed gadget”, you need to meet the man behind the logo. Shu Uemura (1928–2007) was born in Tokyo and started out as a film makeup artist. In the late 1950s he went to Hollywood. His breakthrough came on the set of My Geisha (1962): he stepped in for an ill makeup artist and transformed Shirley MacLaine into a Japanese woman so convincingly that from then on he worked with stars like Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball.

His first product, from 1960, was a cleansing oil. It removed makeup better than soap while moisturising the skin. In Japan it is still a cult classic. In 1964 Uemura returned home, and in 1967 he founded his own company and opened a boutique on Tokyo's Omotesando. Since 1983 the brand has carried his name, and since 2004 it has belonged to L’Oréal. It is also famous for its eyelash curler, which even gets a mention in The Devil Wears Prada.

Uemura always said that healthy skin comes first, and that makeup should enhance natural beauty, not replace it. It's hard to imagine a better partner for an angel who has gone without clothes for twenty years and never pretends to be anything else.

Sonny Angel has always worn nothing but a hat. Now, for the first time, he gets something more: a colour that says who he is.

Five angels, five personalities

The figures are named after colours from the shu uemura palette, and each colour comes with its own personality. So you're not just choosing a shade, you're choosing a mood.

Artsy Peacock — a peacock in dazzling violets. Expression and individuality; an angel for anyone who wants to awaken their creativity.
Zen Deer — a deer in shimmering blues. Calm, mystery and quiet inner strength.
Lava Fox — a fox in radiant reds. Emotions held in check by reason, courage and independence.
Solar Tanuki — a tanuki in golden yellows. Fun and good energy that chases bad moods away.
Shu-Shu Monkey — a monkey in prismatic pinks. The wild card of the series: self-confidence, urban creativity, the courage to express yourself.

A face as a canvas

As a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts, I look at this series a little differently from an ordinary collab. Shu Uemura treated the face as a canvas and cosmetics as paint. To this day the brand is known for its handmade brushes. In this series the idea comes back the other way round: colour isn't applied to a face — the face, a tiny angel, is built out of colour.

The series seems to say that colour isn't an accessory, it's character. Violet is expression, blue is calm, red is courage. If you've ever changed your lipstick and felt like a slightly different person, you know what I mean. These figures are five such versions of you, captured in a few centimetres of vinyl.

Pre-order at Kickomi

The worldwide release of the series is 22 October 2026. You can pre-order it from me right now, and shipping starts on 1 November. It's a good moment if you're thinking about a Christmas or Saint Nicholas gift: the series is festive by design, and Sonny Angel limited editions tend to disappear fast.

No. The series has five figures and no secret. Every angel is equally likely to be drawn.

If I buy a box of 6, will I get the full series?
