The bears that helped children talk about feelings
In 1981, artist Elena Kucharik was commissioned by American Greetings to draw bears for greeting cards. The idea was simple and brilliant: each bear a different color, each with a unique symbol on its belly – a Belly Badge – representing a specific emotion or value. A rainbow for joy, a four-leaf clover for luck, a heart for love. Care Bears officially debuted in 1982, hit stores as plush toys in 1983 – and immediately became a phenomenon. To date, over 70 million 33-centimeter plush toys have been sold.
Elena Kucharik
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Kucharik graduated with a Fine Arts degree from Kent State University and began her career as a greeting card artist at American Greetings. When the company commissioned the first bear sketches, it was Kucharik who created hundreds of illustrations for cards, books, clothing, and licensed products – becoming the lead artist for the entire line and a co-creator of the brand. After 25 years of freelance work, she focused on illustrating children's books.
Belly Badges & Emotions
The key idea of the Care Bears – emotion symbols on their bellies – came from artist Dave Polter and Ralph Shaffer of TCFC. The bears were meant to help children talk about feelings – to give them a language of emotions before they had words. Grumpy Bear (sour) next to Cheer Bear (rainbow) – so children would know that being in a bad mood is also okay. This was a revolution in thinking about toys.
Care-a-Lot
The bears live in Care-a-Lot – a cloud kingdom built of hearts and stars (a play on Camelot). From there, they descend to Earth to help children in difficult times – using the Care Bear Stare, a glowing beam of energy shot from their Belly Badge. The cartoon debuted in 1985, with three feature films in 1985, 1986, and 1987.
Returns and Revivals
Care Bears have been resurrected numerous times. In 2002, American Greetings renewed the brand for its 20th anniversary. In 2007 – CGI animation. In 2019 – "Unlock the Magic" on Boomerang and HBO Max. Today, the brand belongs to WildBrain. Collaborations with fashion brands, collectible plush toys, and figurines appeal to millennials who have known Grumpy Bear since birth.
