A forest bunny who conquered the world
In 1975, Yasuko Matsumoto created a white rabbit in a red hood for Sanrio — originally as a Little Red Riding Hood version for a Christmas promotion. No one knew that this character would become one of the most recognizable kawaii icons in the world. My Melody has consistently been in the top five most popular Sanrio characters for half a century, has won the Character Ranking three times, and to this day remains the embodiment of innocence, warmth, and a pure heart for many fans.
Origin and hood
My Melody was born in the magical forest of Mariland and wears a hood sewn by her grandmother — first red, then pink. Matsumoto created this character, as well as Kiki and Lala from Little Twin Stars, making her the author of two iconic Sanrio duos. My Melody is one of the brand's three original characters — a generation older than Cinnamoroll.
Rival with character
In 2005, Kuromi, a mischievous anti-hero black rabbit, first appeared in the anime Onegai My Melody, becoming My Melody's inverse mirror. The pair became one of Sanrio's most popular duos. Kuromi and My Melody are not enemies — they are two sides of the same story.
25 years in the top 5
My Melody won the Sanrio Character Ranking in 2010, 2011, and 2014. For 25 consecutive years, she has never fallen out of the top five — a record no other Sanrio character has achieved. Not even Hello Kitty has managed this. It's proof of something hard to explain with data: people simply love this little rabbit.
For whom?
For those who seek not only aesthetics but also emotional warmth in kawaii. My Melody is a character for optimists — sincere, kind, and rebelliously sweet. She appeals to nostalgic millennials and a new generation discovering Sanrio through TikTok and blind boxes alike.

Find My Melody
For half a century, My Melody has consistently hit the same spot — the heart. Yasuko Matsumoto created a rabbit so simple and sincere that it's impossible not to love her. And that's the hardest thing in design.
