A marine biologist who taught with comics
Stephen Hillenburg didn't plan a career as an animator — he was a marine biologist and teacher. At the Orange County Marine Institute, he taught coastal ecology and created comics about tidal pool creatures — "The Intertidal Zone" — to engage children with underwater life. These same characters became the genesis of SpongeBob SquarePants. For his pitch to Nickelodeon in 1997, Hillenburg showed up in a Hawaiian shirt, with a terrarium full of character models and Hawaiian music in the background. Nickelodeon gave the green light immediately. On July 17, 1999, SpongeBob debuted on air and changed popular culture forever.
Stephen Hillenburg
Born in 1961 in Oklahoma, raised in Anaheim, California. He loved the ocean since childhood, inspired by Jacques Cousteau's films. He studied marine biology, then animation at the California Institute of the Arts. After his success with Rocko's Modern Life at Nickelodeon, he got the chance to create his own series. He created SpongeBob as a character full of innocence and positivity — because he believed such a philosophy was rare in pop culture. In 2017, he was diagnosed with ALS. He died on November 26, 2018, at the age of 57.
Bikini Bottom
SpongeBob lives in a pineapple under the sea in the city of Bikini Bottom. He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab, blows bubbles, and is friends with Patrick the starfish. Hillenburg chose a sponge because it is one of the most plastic and changing creatures of the ocean — it can transform, regenerate, and do impossible things. Squidward was named after Hillenburg's wife, Karen — the same Karen as Karen Plankton.
The film as a finale — and a return
Hillenburg directed The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) as the planned end of the series. Nickelodeon refused — the series was too profitable. Hillenburg stepped down as showrunner but returned for the second film in 2015. Fans still consider seasons 1–3 to be the golden age and deeply mourn any deviation from Hillenburg's original vision.
Cultural phenomenon
SpongeBob is one of the biggest internet and meme phenomena in history. Mocking SpongeBob, Surprised Patrick, Imagination Rainbow — they entered the global internet's lexicon. After Hillenburg's death, over 1.2 million fans signed a petition for the NFL to play "Sweet Victory" at the Super Bowl. Today, collectible SpongeBob figures and plush toys are among the most sought-after licenses on the market.
