The mouthless character that speaks to everyone
In 1974, young designer Yuko Shimizu drew a small, white, mouthless kitten on a coin purse. Little did she know she was creating one of the most recognizable characters in pop culture history. Hello Kitty — now worth billions of dollars, present in over 60 countries — started with one simple premise: a character with no facial expression can express anything, because you project your emotions onto it.
Genesis of an icon
Shimizu joined Sanrio in 1974 and designed Hello Kitty that same year — whose fictional birthday is November 1st, just like the designer's own birthday. The inspiration was the black kitten "Kitty" from Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking-Glass." The name "Hello" was added by Sanrio president, Shintaro Tsuji, as a greeting without language barriers.
The power of simplicity
The lack of a mouth is no accident — it's a design philosophy. Sanrio explains that Hello Kitty "speaks from the heart" and is not tied to any language. The simple, white form with a red bow became a mirror in which everyone can see themselves — regardless of age, culture, or language.
From coin purse to empire
The first Hello Kitty figurine hit the market in 1975. Today, the brand generates over 8 billion dollars annually, and the character appears on over 50,000 different products. Shimizu left Sanrio in 1976 and never made much money from Hello Kitty — but she created something immortal.
For whom?
Hello Kitty started with little girls, but since the 90s, she has also conquered the world of adult collectors. Today, she is an icon of kawaii culture, nostalgia, streetwear, and art all in one — for those who grew up with the bow and for those who are just discovering it.
