Villain turned hero
In 1985, young animator Chris Sanders was drawing a strange, mischievous creature for an unpublished children's book. The project failed—the character was too subtle to fit its story into 32 pages. Sanders put the sketches away. For 17 years, no one knew about them. In 1996, Disney's head of animation asked him if he had anything to propose. Sanders pulled out the old drawings. Over sushi dinner at Disney World, he told a story about a lonely monster from the forest who didn't know where he came from. The producer said, "put him in the human world." That's how Lilo & Stitch and Experiment 626 were born.
Chris Sanders
Animator, director, screenwriter — and the voice of Stitch in almost every production. Sanders voiced Stitch, "just annoying people at the studio, calling them on the phone." The condition for Disney to approve Lilo & Stitch was: "it has to look like you drew it" — meaning not like traditional Disney, but like Sanders' personal style. He previously worked on Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and Mulan.
Hawaii and Ohana
When the producer suggested moving the story to the human world, Sanders looked at a map on the wall — and saw Hawaii, where he had recently been on vacation. From a road map, he took the names: "Lilo Lane" and "Nani." "Ohana means family" — that's the heart of the entire film. Stitch, genetically engineered for destruction, discovers that "family means nobody gets left behind." The film was made on a small budget with watercolor backgrounds, which Disney had not used since Dumbo (1941).
Asian Phenomenon
Stitch is one of Disney characters with the largest fan base in Japan, Korea, and China — where his popularity far exceeds Western popularity. In Japan, an anime spin-off "Stitch!" was created. In Hong Kong and Taiwan, Stitch is an absolute collectible must-have. The Japanese and Asian "ugly-cute" aesthetic adopted him as their own — a monster that can be both strange and lovable.
Live-action 2025
In May 2025, the live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch was released — grossing over a billion dollars at the global box office. Chris Sanders once again voiced Stitch, recording five four-hour sessions. Dean DeBlois directed. Collectible editions for the premiere sold out immediately in most countries.

👾 Experiment 626 / Stitch
Genetically engineered for destruction. Indestructible, super strong, intelligent. His only weakness is fire, water, and… Ohana.

The Aloha State as the heart of the story — Disney's first major animation set outside of a European fairy tale
Chris Sanders kept Stitch in a drawer for 17 years. Over sushi dinner at Disney World, he pulled out the old sketches and told a story about a lonely monster who didn't know where he came from. The producer said, "put him in the human world." Stitch found a home in Hawaii. And in the hearts of millions.
